Thanks to The National Lottery Heritage Fund and National Lottery players, the Liverpool City Region will soon have a new 200-mile walking and cycling trail, linking the city’s historic waterfront with countryside, coasts, canals and communities across the region.

The new trail will be made up of 20 stages forming a looped route linking the six boroughs of the Liverpool City Region (LCR) – Halton, Knowsley, Liverpool, Sefton, St Helens and Wirral – taking walkers and cyclists through some of the region’s most distinctive landscapes and heritage sites.

The route will bring LCR and parts of Cheshire, Lancashire and Warrington together in one expansive walking and cycling trail, and each stage will be accessible by public transport.

This isn’t just a trail for experienced walkers and cyclists.

By connecting the route with public transport and creating accessible information and waymarking, we can make it easier for more people to enjoy walking and cycling, discover new places and spend time outdoors.

We’re currently mapping out the route in detail and working with communities across the region on exciting activities that will bring people closer to the trail.

We’ll begin to promote the trail in the spring of 2027, and plan to complete it by summer 2027.

We’ll be calling for volunteers early in 2027, but we’d like to hear from you now if you’d like to be involved, or if you’re a community group in the region. Just drop a line to info@cprelancashire.org.uk and we can chat!

The LCR Ringway is a sister project to the GM Ringway, a 200-mile walking route around Greater Manchester. You can walk the GM Ringway today.
